Route 66 Marathon Recap

The last time I updated my blog, I was just about to head to Tulsa for the Williams Route 66 Marathon.  I was excited, a little nervous but definitely ready to take on the course.  The fact that I’m writing this update means I survived!  It was a lot tougher than I anticipated.

Race day started off at 25 degrees, with a wind chill of 12.  It was COLD!! By the time I had reached the first marker, I had ice in my beard.  But, I kept going.  The halfway point came and went.  I high-fived a baby for extra speed.  It worked!  Jamie was there to cheer me on, offering me a swig of water.  She braved the cold the entire day as a spectator.  Well, she and the baby.  🙂  That made this race even more special.  My dad and brother, Jordan, were waiting for me at mile 18 and 24, yelling “go Kirk!” and trying to snap a few pictures as I kept on truckin’.  As I came through at 24 miles, I heard them yell and then I heard someone behind me say, “hi Dan!”  I looked behind me.  She said, “how do you know Dan?”  I said, “that’s my Dad!”  Small world.  It was Sarah, one of my dad and brother’s friends from horse racing.  We ran the next mile or so together, talking about how funny it was to run into each other.

This marathon had an optional .3mi detour called the Center of the Universe.  It was built up to have bands, beer and a bit of a celebration in the area.  They just had beer…oh well.  Because I took the detour, I got a special medallion to add to my race medal.  26.5 miles was the total distance, meaning that not only did I run a marathon, it was actually an ultra-marathon (anything over 26.2 is considered “ultra.”)

We ended the race at a balmy 25 degrees. The last few miles were hell on my hips and my feet felt like I was running on stumps.  When I came out of the COU detour, I kicked it into high gear (must’ve been the beer) and made it a point to finish strong.  Jamie, Dad and Jordan were all there to see me cross the finish line.  My official finish time was 4:41:33.

Oh, something to mention: I typically run with music.  That’s how I trained and how I intended to run the race.  I had an awesome playlist to keep me motivated.  Sounds like a good plan, right?  Well, apparently, my iPhone didn’t get the memo.  The headphone jack shorted out around the second mile and I ended up running 24 miles without music.  Definitely a challenge, but it was nice to hear the encouragement of the crowd and from other runners.  I was surprised by how many people carried on a full conversation while they ran.

There is absolutely NOTHING like crossing the finish line and seeing your friends and loved ones.  I can’t even describe it.  I know Mom was there, too.  Still my biggest fan.

A few notes:

  • Over 1,000 miles were logged in 2013
  • I enjoyed the holidays
  • Approximately 10lbs were gained during said holidays
  • I’ve been running at least 1mi every day since Memorial Day 2013
  • No more full marathons.  26.2 (or 26.5) is just too hard on the body.
  • The goal is to work on my half marathon time in 2013.  13.1 is much more manageable and with a baby on the way, it’s probably more than a challenge!

Today is January 12, 2014.  I’ve continued my running streak, completing 229 days of continuous running (at least 1mi per day.)  I will admit that I had a couple of delicious donuts for breakfast.  After all, why not enjoy them every once in a while?

It’s a beautiful day with the sun shining.  I’m heading out for a run.  Thanks for all your support!
